Paving a Fast-Growing West Bank Town

Few places near Baton Rouge need as much asphalt paving as Addis, simply because so much of it is new. The town counted 1,222 people in 1990, 3,593 in 2010 and 6,731 at the 2020 census, nearly doubling in a decade. Most of that growth came as subdivisions west of the river, and new households soon want more parking than the builder provided. We pave widenings, parking pads and new driveways, repair and overlay older blacktop, and sealcoat across Addis.

Baton Rouge Junction

Addis was founded in 1881 or 1882 as Baton Rouge Junction, a division point on the Texas and Pacific Railroad, and later renamed for J. W. Addis, a railroad official. It incorporated in 1915, and the old Bank of Addis building is on the National Register as home to the Addis Museum. The blocks near the tracks have smaller lots and older pavement, while the subdivisions spreading out from them have wide garages and short builder drives.

Extra parking without a new slab

In newer Addis neighborhoods, the most common request we get is room for one more vehicle, a boat or a trailer. Asphalt is a practical way to add it. Here is how we approach a parking pad or widening:

  • Check HOA rules on driveway width and surface before we design
  • Locate utilities and the ditch or curb line at the street
  • Excavate and build a compacted stone base for the new area
  • Pave with a clean, straight seam where new meets old, or overlay the whole drive so it reads as one surface

We confirm with the town or parish whether your project needs a permit.

Low ground at 13 feet

Addis sits at about 13 feet on the west bank floodplain of the Mississippi. The soil is fine and wet, with very little natural fall. New subdivisions were often built up with fill, and if that fill was not compacted well, pavement on top of it settles in the first few years. When we find soft fill under a planned pad, we remove it and replace it with stone. We also shape every surface so water heads for the street or a swale, not toward the garage.

Builder asphalt that wore out early

Some newer drives in town were paved quickly and thin. Within a few years they start to ravel, crack across the apron or sink near the garage. If the house is still under a builder warranty, check that first. After that, we can mill the worst areas, patch soft spots and overlay the drive for a longer-lasting surface.

Timing a new driveway

If you have just closed on a new Addis home with a gravel or temporary drive, there is no need to rush the paving. Letting fill settle through a few wet months can show where the soft spots are. When you are ready, we will check the ground, correct those spots and pave over a base that has already proven itself.

Addis Questions

Can I add an asphalt parking pad for a boat in Addis?

Yes, if your HOA allows it. We build a stone base and pave it to match or overlay the rest of the driveway.

Why is my new subdivision driveway already sinking?

Usually the fill under it was not compacted well. The fix is to remove the soft material, replace it with stone and repave that area.

Will a widened section look patched?

A new section will look darker at first. An overlay across the full width makes the drive look uniform.
