Lines That Do Their Job
Parking lot striping looks simple, but it carries rules. Faded lines confuse drivers, cost you spaces and make a property look neglected, and accessible parking that is laid out wrong is a compliance problem. In Baton Rouge, sun and frequent rain wear paint down steadily, and every sealcoat covers the old lines, so most lots need restriping on a regular cycle. HomeGuide notes striping typically lasts two to five years depending on traffic and paint.
Restriping vs. a new layout
Restriping repaints the existing layout over the old lines. A new layout changes where stalls, aisles and arrows go, which is common after a lot is resurfaced, when a tenant changes, or when a lot was never laid out efficiently. HomeGuide says a new layout typically adds 20 to 50 percent to the cost compared with restriping. Before a new layout, we measure the lot, mark stall widths and aisle widths, and confirm the plan with you before any paint goes down.
Accessible parking
The U.S. Department of Justice explains that restriping a lot triggers the 2010 ADA Standards for accessible parking. The number of accessible spaces depends on the total in the lot: one for 1 to 25 spaces, two for 26 to 50, three for 51 to 75 and four for 76 to 100. At least one in every six accessible spaces must be van-accessible. A standard accessible car space is at least 96 inches wide with a 60-inch access aisle; a van space can be 132 inches wide with a 60-inch aisle, or 96 inches with a 96-inch aisle. Signs go at the head of each space with the bottom of the sign at least 60 inches above the ground, and the space and aisle can slope no more than 1:48 in any direction. On a flat Baton Rouge lot, that slope limit is usually easy to meet; on a lot with a drainage swale through it, the accessible spaces need to go somewhere else.
What we stripe
- Parking stalls, including compact and angled layouts
- Accessible spaces, access aisles and the access route markings
- Directional arrows, stop bars and crosswalks
- Fire lanes and curb painting
- Loading zones and no-parking areas
- Stencils and numbering
Timing
Paint needs a clean, dry surface. After sealcoating, the sealer has to cure before lines go on. We schedule striping for dry stretches, often early in the day or after hours so the lot can reopen quickly.
Paint and wear
Traffic paint on a busy lot wears fastest in drive lanes and at entrances. Where lines wear quickly, we can recommend a more durable material for those areas. Fresh paint needs time to dry before traffic, and we cone off sections while it does.

Parking Lot Striping Questions
How many accessible spaces does my lot need?
Under the 2010 ADA Standards: one for 1 to 25 total spaces, two for 26 to 50, three for 51 to 75 and four for 76 to 100, with at least one van-accessible space for every six accessible spaces. Larger lots follow the same table upward.
Do I have to add accessible spaces when I restripe?
The Department of Justice says restriping triggers the 2010 Standards, so the lot should meet the current requirements for the number and layout of accessible spaces when it is restriped.
How often should a lot be restriped?
HomeGuide puts typical striping life at two to five years. Every sealcoat also covers the lines, so lots are restriped after each one.
Can you stripe after hours?
Yes. Many lots are striped early in the morning or after closing so the business is not disrupted.
