Room to Spread Out Means Longer Pavement

Asphalt paving in St. Gabriel tends to involve long distances. The community incorporated as a town in 1994 and became a city in 2001. It covers about 29.88 square miles on the east bank of the Mississippi in Iberville Parish and counted 6,433 residents in 2020, so many homes sit on large parcels with long driveways and room for trucks. We pave new drives, convert gravel to asphalt, patch and overlay, sealcoat, and pave work areas and small lots.

Acadian roots, industrial present

The area was settled by Acadians, with land granted between 1771 and 1773, and St. Gabriel Catholic Church is one of the oldest churches in Louisiana. Bayou Manchac marks the line between St. Gabriel, Ascension Parish and East Baton Rouge Parish, and the city includes the Carville neighborhood. Farming once dominated the local economy; petrochemical plants do now. Many households here have work trucks, which matters for how a driveway should be built.

Paving for trucks, not just cars

A pickup with a loaded trailer puts far more stress on pavement than a sedan. On St. Gabriel drives we plan for that:

  • A thicker stone base along the whole run, not just near the house
  • Extra thickness where trucks turn, back up or park
  • Wide turnarounds so trailers do not cut across the yard or the pavement edge
  • Shoulders compacted so edges do not break under tires

On long drives, asphalt also has the advantage of being repairable in sections if one area fails later.

Low ground on the floodplain

St. Gabriel sits at about 16 feet on the river's floodplain. In August 2016, the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in the city was closed and evacuated because of flood damage. Water is the main threat to pavement here. On a long rural drive, we look for the low spots where water crosses, and decide whether the drive needs a culvert, a raised section of base or a swale beside it.

Gravel drives that have had enough

Many St. Gabriel properties started with gravel. When ruts and washouts become a weekly chore, paving makes sense. Existing gravel that is firm can be regraded, topped with fresh stone and compacted as part of the base, which keeps the cost of a long conversion reasonable. We confirm with the city whether your project needs a permit before we schedule.

Working around plant shifts

Many St. Gabriel residents work at the petrochemical plants nearby on rotating shifts, so being home for a paving day can be hard. We walk the job with you at the estimate, agree on the plan and where vehicles will be parked, and can do much of the work while you are on shift. A new drive can usually take cars within a day or two.
