Flat Lots Need Carefully Shaped Asphalt
Asphalt paving in Prairieville takes careful grading, because the land offers almost none on its own. Prairieville sits at about 23 feet on nearly flat ground that was once pasture and prairie, and it grew from 26,895 people in 2010 to 33,197 in 2020, a 23.4 percent increase. Most homes here are from the last 30 years, and their driveways are now ready for widening, resurfacing or repair. We pave, overlay, patch and sealcoat for homeowners and small businesses across the community.
From pasture to subdivisions
The name comes from the pastures that once lined the area. One familiar example, the Phillips Farm, sold its pasture in 1992, and the Seven Oaks subdivision was built there. That story repeated across Prairieville through the 1990s and 2000s. The result is a lot of similar-aged driveways, many of them asphalt that has oxidized to gray and started to ravel along the edges, or concrete that owners would like to widen with a matching asphalt pad.
Getting water off a flat driveway
On a flat lot, a driveway can easily become the lowest hard surface, and water sits on it after every storm. Standing water is hard on asphalt: it works into small cracks, softens the base and speeds up oxidation. When we pave in Prairieville we:
- Shoot grades before any work so we know where water should go
- Build a crown or cross slope into the surface, even if it is barely visible
- Keep the finished edge slightly above the yard so water does not wick under it
- Make sure downspouts do not dump onto the drive
It is a small difference in the finished surface, but it decides whether the drive lasts.
The 2016 lesson
In August 2016, nearly one-third of homes in Ascension Parish, about 15,000 structures, flooded after a levee on the Amite River was overtopped. Pavement cannot stop a river, but a well-built base recovers from high water far better than a thin layer on dirt. If your drive has developed dips or cracks since then, it is worth having the base checked rather than sealing over the damage.
Permits through the parish
Because Prairieville is unincorporated, permits go through Ascension Parish. The parish permitting page says first access driveways along public rights-of-way are requested through the parish call center, and it lists a grading and fill form. If your project adds a new connection to the road, adds fill or changes drainage, we check what the parish needs before we schedule.
HOA neighborhoods
Many Prairieville subdivisions have homeowners associations with rules on driveway width, surface material and where extra parking may go. Some allow an asphalt widening beside a concrete drive and some do not. Bring your HOA guidelines to the estimate, or send them ahead, and we will design within them, including any approval the association needs before work starts.

Prairieville Questions
Why does water sit on my Prairieville driveway?
The ground is very flat, and many drives were paved without enough cross slope. Regrading during a resurfacing or replacement can fix it.
Can you add an asphalt parking pad next to my concrete driveway?
Yes. We build a stone base beside the slab and pave it, with a clean edge where the two meet.
Do I need a parish permit for a new driveway?
A first access driveway to a public road is requested through the Ascension Parish call center. We check what your project needs before we start.
