Big Lots, Long Drives, Low River Ground
Asphalt paving in Central usually means more driveway than a typical city job. Central voted to incorporate on April 23, 2005, with about 25,000 residents, and it counted 29,565 people at the 2020 census across roughly 62.5 square miles. That is a lot of land per household, and it shows in the driveways: long runs back from the road, turnarounds, aprons in front of shops and parking for trucks and trailers. We pave new driveways, convert gravel to asphalt, overlay worn blacktop, repair failed sections and sealcoat across the city.
Why asphalt suits a long rural drive
On a driveway several hundred feet long, asphalt has some real advantages. It goes down quickly, it can be driven on soon after paving, and it flexes a little as the ground shifts instead of cracking into panels. It is also easy to repair in sections, so a soft spot halfway up the run can be dug out and patched without touching the rest. The trade-off is that asphalt needs a good stone base and periodic sealcoat to reach a long service life, and we plan for both.
Turning gravel into blacktop
A lot of Central homes started with a gravel or limestone drive. Over the years that gravel gets pushed into the soil, ruts form where tires track, and every heavy rain washes some of it into the ditch. When you convert to asphalt, the existing stone can often become part of the base. We regrade it, add and compact new stone where it has thinned, and pave on top. That reuse is one of the ways to keep a long drive within budget.
Two rivers frame the city
The Comite River forms Central's western border and the Amite River its eastern border, and the two meet at the southern edge of the city. Both reached record levels in August 2016, and Central saw significant flooding. Driveways that sat under water for days, then carried loaded debris trucks during cleanup, often have sunken spots and broken edges today. When we evaluate one of those drives, we probe for soft base and look at how water crosses the lot now, because a repair on a drive that still floods will not last.
Greenwell Springs and the older side of Central
Greenwell Springs, now part of Central, grew around a rural resort built in the 1850s on 10 medicinal springs. The resort is long gone, but the area still has older homes on large wooded parcels with narrow, patched blacktop or chip-and-seal drives. On these jobs the work is usually a widening, a new base under the worst sections and a fresh surface over the whole run, with care taken around large tree roots near the edge.

Central Questions
Can my old gravel be used under a new asphalt driveway?
Often, yes. If the gravel is firm and not mixed heavily with mud, we regrade it, add stone where it is thin, compact it and pave over it.
Is asphalt a good choice for a very long driveway in Central?
It is a common choice for long drives because it goes down fast, handles some ground movement and is easy to repair in sections. It does need a sound base and sealcoat every few years.
My driveway flooded in 2016 and has soft spots. What now?
Soft spots usually mean the base was weakened. We cut out those areas, rebuild the stone base, repave them, and look at the drainage so water stops crossing the drive in the same place.
