Replacing Pavement That Has Done Its Time
Asphalt paving in Baker is mostly about replacing and restoring what is already there. Baker grew from 8,281 residents in 1970 to 12,865 in 1980, its biggest decade by far, and then leveled off at 12,455 by the 2020 census. A large share of the city's homes, and the driveways and parking areas that go with them, were built during that growth spurt. We replace failed drives, resurface worn ones, fix potholes and broken edges, sealcoat, and pave small lots for churches and businesses.
A compact, settled city
Baker covers about 8.4 square miles, all land, and sits 11 miles north of downtown Baton Rouge, with Zachary bordering it to the north. A 2019 count put the city at 5,276 housing units. It was first known as Cottonville and was renamed in 1888 for Josephus Smith Baker. With little open land left, most of our work here happens on established lots, often with neighbors' drives, fences and mailboxes close by, so we plan the equipment path before the first truck arrives.
Reading an old driveway
After four decades, an asphalt drive tells you what went wrong. Long cracks running down the middle often mean the base was never wide enough. A net of small cracks with loose pieces, called alligator cracking, means water has softened the base. Ruts in the tire paths mean the base was thin or the asphalt was too soft for the load. Each of those has a different fix:
- Isolated cracks on a firm drive: clean, fill and seal
- Alligator cracking in one area: cut out, rebuild the base, patch with hot asphalt
- Widespread failure: remove the old pavement, regrade, build new base, repave
We show you what we find and price the options separately.
Converting an old concrete drive to asphalt
Some Baker homes have original concrete drives that are badly broken. Replacing them with asphalt is often less expensive than new concrete and faster to finish. We break out and haul off the old slabs, build a compacted stone base and pave. If the old concrete is still flat and stable, paving over it is sometimes possible, but cracks in the slabs will eventually show through, so we discuss that honestly before choosing.
Ditches and culverts
Many older Baker streets drain to roadside ditches. If your drive crosses one, the culvert under it matters as much as the asphalt on top. East Baton Rouge Parish culvert rules bar plastic pipe under driveways and require driveway pipe at least 24 feet long, and we confirm with the City of Baker whether its own office handles the permit at your address. A crushed or undersized culvert is a common reason the end of a driveway sinks.
Church and small business lots
Baker has a lot of neighborhood churches and small businesses with parking areas that were paved decades ago. Those lots usually fail first at the entrance, where every car turns, and around drains that sit a little high and leave a ring of standing water. We patch the entrance with a thicker base, adjust the grade around the drain where we can, overlay or seal the rest and restripe so spaces and any accessible parking are marked clearly. Work can be split across weekdays so Sunday parking stays open.

Baker Questions
Is it worth patching my old Baker driveway, or should I replace it?
If the failures are in a few spots and the rest is firm, patching and sealing can buy years. If cracking and soft spots cover most of the drive, replacement is usually the better use of money.
Can you replace my broken concrete driveway with asphalt?
Yes. We remove the concrete, build a compacted stone base and pave. It is a common choice for older Baker homes.
Why does the end of my driveway keep sinking?
Often the culvert underneath is crushed, undersized or poorly bedded. We check the pipe before patching the asphalt over it.
