Paving on Higher, Rolling Ground

Asphalt paving in Slaughter means country driveways on ground that actually slopes. The town sits along the southern edge of East Feliciana Parish at about 128 feet, well above Baton Rouge, and it covers about 5.47 square miles with 1,035 residents at the 2020 census. With fewer than 200 people per square mile, most homes have long drives, shops or barns, and room for trucks. We pave new drives, convert gravel, add aprons and turnarounds, repair and sealcoat.

A depot name that stuck

Slaughter incorporated in 1889. Before that the community was called Belzara and then Burnsville. The name it kept came from an Illinois Central Railroad depot built for the Slaughter family farm. Novelist Michael Ondaatje took the title of Coming Through Slaughter from the town. Many of the roads and drives here still follow old farm lines.

Water moves fast on a slope

The biggest difference between paving here and in the river parishes is runoff speed. On a sloped driveway, water wants to run straight down the pavement, picking up speed and cutting away the soil along the edges. Over time, that undermines the asphalt and the edges break off. Our approach:

  • Shape the drive with a cross slope so water leaves the surface along the way, not at the bottom
  • Build and compact shoulders so the edge of the asphalt is supported
  • Add a swale or turnout where a long run needs it
  • Set the culvert at the road to carry the ditch flow

On steeper sections, asphalt gives good traction when wet and can be patched easily if a storm does damage.

Gravel drives on hills

Gravel on a slope washes into ruts after every heavy rain, then has to be regraded and topped up. Converting to asphalt stops that cycle. The existing gravel, if firm, becomes part of the base; we add stone where it has thinned, compact and pave.

Shop and barn aprons

Where a drive meets a shop or barn, tractors, trailers and work trucks turn and stop. Those areas need a thicker base and thicker asphalt than the rest of the run. We size them to what will actually use them. We confirm with the town whether your project needs a permit before we schedule.

Paving in stages

A long Slaughter driveway does not have to be paved all at once. Many owners start with the section nearest the house or the steepest stretch, where gravel washes out the worst, and extend the asphalt later. We build each phase so the next one ties in cleanly with no step or low seam.

Slaughter Questions

How do you stop a sloped driveway from washing out at the edges?

We give it a cross slope so water leaves along the way, compact the shoulders and add a swale where needed.

Is asphalt slippery on a hill?

Asphalt has good traction when wet, which is one reason it suits sloped country drives.

Can you pave in front of my shop for a tractor?

Yes. We build that area with a thicker base and asphalt sized for the equipment.
