When an Overlay Is the Right Call
Asphalt resurfacing, also called an overlay, places a new layer of hot-mix asphalt over existing pavement. For a Baton Rouge driveway or lot that has gone gray and rough under years of sun and rain but is still firmly supported, it is often the most economical way to get a like-new surface. HomeGuide puts driveway resurfacing at about $3 to $7 per square foot and says an overlay on asphalt in reasonable condition typically saves 20 to 30 percent compared with full replacement. The catch is that an overlay is only as good as what is under it.
The test: is the base still sound?
An overlay bonds to the old surface and moves with it. If the old asphalt is firmly supported, the new layer gets a solid platform. If the base is wet or broken, cracks in the old surface reflect up through the new one, often within a year or two. Before recommending an overlay, we walk the surface looking for:
- Alligator cracking, which signals a failed base
- Ruts or low spots where water stands after rain
- Soft areas that move under a vehicle
- Edges that are broken or undercut by a ditch
Isolated failures can be cut out and rebuilt before the overlay. If failures are widespread, we will tell you that replacement is the better investment.
Height is the hidden problem on flat lots
Every overlay raises the surface, usually by an inch and a half to two inches. On a sloped lot that rarely matters. On a flat Baton Rouge lot it can mean water now runs toward the garage door, a threshold ends up level with the asphalt, or the apron no longer meets the street cleanly. Where the new layer has to meet a slab, a walk or the road, we mill or saw-cut a keyed joint so the overlay feathers in at the right height and the surface still drains the way it should.
How an overlay is done
We clean the surface, cut out and patch failed areas, and seal larger cracks. Joints are milled at the transitions. A tack coat goes down so the layers bond, then the new asphalt is placed and compacted to the thickness in your quote.
Cracks that come back
If the old surface has long cracks from shrink-swell soil or a fault trend, an overlay will hide them for a while, but they tend to reflect through. We point those cracks out before you decide, and on lots we may suggest treating those areas separately.
Commercial lots
Lots are usually resurfaced in sections so the business can stay open. They are typically sealed and restriped afterward, and restriping has to follow the 2010 ADA Standards for accessible parking.
What Resurfacing Includes
The prep work matters as much as the new layer.
Condition check
We confirm the base is sound enough to carry an overlay.
Spot repairs
Failed areas cut out and rebuilt before the new layer.
Milled joints
Transitions at the garage, walks and street cut so the overlay feathers in.
Tack coat and overlay
Bonding coat applied, then new hot mix placed and compacted.

Typical Resurfacing Costs
| Item | Published national range |
|---|---|
| Driveway resurfacing (HomeGuide driveway guide) | $3 to $7 per sq ft |
| Asphalt overlay (HomeGuide repair guide) | $1 to $3 per sq ft |
| Savings vs. full replacement (HomeGuide) | About 20% to 30% |
| Saw-cut patch before overlay (HomeGuide) | $4 to $12 per sq ft |
National ranges from published cost guides; each builds its numbers differently. Prices around Baton Rouge can differ, and base work, drainage, removal and access move the total. Your written estimate is the price. HomeGuide lists overlay pricing differently in its driveway and repair guides, which is why two ranges appear.
How It Works
1. Assess
We check for base failure, drainage and transition heights.
2. Quote
Overlay area, thickness and pre-repairs itemized in writing.
3. Prepare
Surface cleaned, failed areas patched, cracks sealed, joints milled.
4. Overlay
Tack coat applied, new asphalt placed and compacted.

Asphalt Resurfacing Questions
How long does an overlay last?
On a sound base with good drainage, an overlay can give many years of service. On a failed or wet base it can crack in a year or two, which is why we check the base first.
Will an overlay fix ponding?
Sometimes. Shallow low spots can be built up as part of the overlay. Deep depressions usually mean the base has moved and should be repaired first, and on flat lots the overall grade may need to change.
Will resurfacing raise my driveway?
Yes, by the thickness of the new layer. We mill or cut joints where it meets the garage, walks or street so there is no lip and water still drains away.
Can I resurface just part of a lot?
Yes. Commercial lots are often done in phases so parking stays open.
