Driveway Paving for Walker Homes
Asphalt paving in Walker is busy work, because the city and the area around it have filled in fast along the I-12 corridor about 20 miles east of Baton Rouge. Walker calls itself the Pine Tree Capital of the World, became a city by proclamation of Governor Bobby Jindal in 2011 and counted 6,374 people at the 2020 census. We pave new driveways, widen builder drives, resurface and repair worn blacktop, and sealcoat for homeowners and small businesses in and around the city.
An 1825 settlement with mostly newer homes
Walker was founded in 1825 as Milton Old Field and renamed in 1890 for Dr. William Elliott Walker, a state legislator. Despite that long history, most homes we see here were built in the last few decades as Livingston Parish boomed. Builder driveways in those subdivisions tend to be one car wide at the street and just enough for two at the garage, and the most common request is a wider drive or a parking pad for a boat, camper or work trailer.
Culverts come first in Walker
Walker's Culvert and Catch Basin Permit lays out a process that controls the start of most driveway jobs that cross a ditch:
- Public Works decides the size, length and quantity of the culvert
- A driveway culvert may not exceed 40 feet
- The owner buys the culvert and fill to the city's specification
- The culvert may not be covered until the public works director or a designee inspects it, and a final inspection follows
We get the pipe sized, set and inspected, then compact the fill and pave across it. Paving over a pipe that later fails inspection means tearing up new asphalt, so we do not skip the order.
Pine roots and pavement
Wooded lots are part of Walker's character, and they are hard on driveways. Pine roots spread close to the surface and can lift asphalt into ridges, especially along the edges. Where a large tree sits beside a planned drive, we talk through the options: routing the drive a few feet away, increasing the base depth, or accepting some future root heave. We avoid cutting major roots close to a trunk, since that can kill the tree.
Fill, settlement and flat ground
Walker sits at about 46 feet, and many lots were built up with fill before the house went in. Fill that was not compacted in layers settles over the first few years, and a driveway on top of it settles too, usually near the garage or along one edge. If we find soft fill, we dig it out and replace it with compacted stone before paving. On flat ground, we also give the surface enough crown and slope so rain does not sit on it.
Trailers, boats and work trucks
A lot of Walker households keep a boat, a camper or a work trailer, and the usual place to park it is the edge of the yard, where it ruts the grass and leaves a mud track to the street. An asphalt pad beside the drive solves that. We size it for the trailer and the truck that pulls it, give it the same stone base as the driveway, and keep it sloped so rain runs off instead of pooling under the trailer tires.

Walker Questions
Who decides the culvert size for my Walker driveway?
Walker Public Works sets the size, length and number of pipes. The owner buys the culvert to city specification, and it must be inspected before it is covered.
How long can a driveway culvert be in Walker?
The city permit says a driveway culvert may not exceed 40 feet.
Will pine roots crack my new asphalt?
They can lift it over time, especially at the edges. We plan the drive location and base depth around large trees to reduce that risk.
